Why Veritas Scholars Academy Was Founded

Veritas began the way many good things do: at home, with parents who wanted more for their children. Marlin and Laurie Detweiler believed their kids deserved both academic rigor and a Christ-centered education, and in 1996, they created the first Veritas product, a set of history flashcards for their four boys. The curriculum grew from there, and so did the demand, as other parents wanted more than strong materials. They wanted structure, community, and live instruction from expert teachers. So Veritas built a school. Nearly 30 years later, we're still here for the same reason: to serve families who want the best for their children.

Today, Veritas Scholars Academy serves more than 10,000 families across 30+ countries. We come alongside parents with an education that's academically serious, grounded in Scripture, and designed to prepare students for faithful lives beyond graduation.

We follow a classical Christian approach grounded in the trivium, a time-tested framework with three stages. Students build foundational knowledge, then develop reasoning skills, then learn to communicate with clarity and conviction. Each stage matches how they naturally grow. The result? Students who learn how to think, not just what to think.

Our 200+ teachers are selected for expertise, teaching ability, and Christian faith. Over two-thirds hold advanced degrees. But credentials aren't everything. Our teachers challenge your student and pray alongside them. And you get committed partners in your child's education.

Math Points Us Back to the Creator

Mr. Hoover teaches math and algebra at Veritas. A former math major turned pastor, he returned to the classroom to share his love for a subject that reveals something true about God: that He is a God of logic and order. Mr. Hoover pushes students who excel and encourages those who find math frustrating. His wife Margaret also teaches at Veritas, and their four children take classes here, too.

Real Community

Online doesn't mean alone. Students build real friendships with classmates they see every week and teachers who know them by name. Once a year, our community gathers in person at the End-of-Year Gathering to celebrate and connect face to face.
